O Holy Night – In Adoration of Christ

“O holy night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth…”

The words to this now-beloved hymn were penned in France in 1847, during a stagecoach ride en route to Paris, whilst the author reflected on the nativity as recounted in the Gospel of Luke. Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure sought to not only imagine what it would have been like to witness the birth of Christ, but also place that scene in words that could be sung and reflected upon by others. Thus ensued the birth of the well-loved song “O Holy Night”, or Cantique de Noel, as it was known in France.

The lyrics below are different from what we normally sing and hear during our modern Christmas season. However, these are the original words written by Roquemaure. I had the sweet opportunity to sing this version of the hymn with my church body during a recent evening Christmas service, and my hope is that you, my readers, might rejoice in it as much as I did. What joy comes from giving our Savior His due praise and adoration during this season!

~ O Holy Night ~

A holy night, the stars are brightly shining; it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth

Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ’til He appeared and the soul felt its worth

Behold the Babe in yonder manger lowly; ’tis God’s own Son come down in human form

Fall on your knees before the Lord most holy!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born

O night divine, O night, O night divine

With humble hearts we bow in adoration, before the Child, gift of God’s matchless love

Sent from on high to purchase our salvation, that we might dwell with Him e’er above

What grace untold, to leave the bliss of glory, and die for sinners guilty and forlorn

Fall on your knees! Repeat the wondrous story!

Behold your King, before Him lowly bend

Behold your King, before Him lowly bend

O day of joy when in eternal splendor, He shall return in His glory to reign

When ev’ry tongue due raise to Him shall render, His pow’r and might to all nations proclaim!

A thrill of hope our longing heart rejoices, for soon shall dawn that glad eternal morn

Fall on your knees! With joy lift up your voices!

His pow’r and glory ever more proclaim!

His power and glory ever more proclaim!

Christ is the Lord, O praise His name forever!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born

O night divine, O night, O night divine
